Summer’s Ending: Give Your Gut a Fall Reset with Nectr Kombucha

There’s something unmistakable about September in cottage country.

The mornings are cooler. The sun disappears a little earlier each evening. The kids are back at school, routines are returning, and before long, sweaters, woodstoves and colourful leaves will replace swimsuits, docks and long summer nights.

As the seasons change, our routines change too — and that includes the way we eat.

Summer tends to mean barbecues, cold drinks, ice cream, weekends away and meals whenever we can squeeze them in. Fall brings us back to schedules, packed lunches, heartier meals and busy weekdays. It’s a great time to think about what we’re putting into our bodies and give our gut a little extra attention.

Fall Food: Think Warm, Colourful and Fibre-Rich

As the temperature drops, we naturally start reaching for warmer, more filling foods. Fortunately, some of the best fall comfort foods can also be fantastic additions to a balanced diet.

Think squash, carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, cabbage, oats, beans, lentils and whole grains. Fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains provide dietary fibre that helps feed the diverse community of microorganisms living in our digestive system — our gut microbiome.

So embrace soup season. Roast those root vegetables. Make the chili. Grab an Ontario apple on the way out the door.

And don’t forget about fermented foods and beverages.

Your Gut Doesn’t Take the Fall Off

Our digestive system does a lot more than process yesterday’s dinner. The gut microbiome is a complex community of microorganisms, and researchers continue to study its connections with digestion, metabolism and normal immune function.

A varied diet containing plenty of plant-based, fibre-rich foods is one of the best foundations for supporting a healthy gut. Fermented foods and beverages can also be part of that picture.

That’s where Nectr fits in.

Nectr Kombucha is raw, organic, unpasteurized and unfiltered. We make it the traditional way, starting with our blend of China Sencha and Assam tea and allowing fermentation to do its thing.

It isn’t a magic potion — and we don’t pretend it is.

It’s simply a locally brewed fermented beverage that can be an easy and delicious part of a balanced lifestyle.

Back to School Means Back to Sharing… Everything

Parents know what September means.

The kids head back to classrooms, sports, activities and playgrounds — and suddenly they’re spending their days around dozens of other kids again.

Lunches get shared. Water bottles get mixed up. Someone is always coughing. And somehow a runny nose seems capable of making its way through an entire household in record time.

No food or drink can guarantee that you won’t get sick, and kombucha isn’t a replacement for the basics: nutritious food, adequate sleep, hydration, handwashing and regular physical activity.

But nutrition does matter to normal immune function, and the gut is one important part of the body’s immune system.

That’s another reason fall is a good time to get back into healthy routines rather than waiting until winter is already here.

Fill the fridge with fruits and vegetables. Get some fibre into your meals. Drink plenty of water. Make sleep a priority. And consider incorporating fermented foods and beverages into your routine.

Trade the Summer Pop for Something Fermented

There’s another easy fall reset you can make.

When you’re reaching into the fridge for something cold and fizzy, try a Nectr.

From Blueberry Lemon and Raspberry Lemonade to Ginger, Cherry Hibiscus, Lavender Mojito, Hopped Grapefruit and Golden Zest, there’s a flavour for just about every mood — even when that mood is “How is it already dark outside?”

Nectr is brewed right here in Haliburton and is always kept refrigerated to protect the quality of the product.

Summer might be winding down, but that doesn’t mean all the good habits have to go with it.

Eat seasonally. Eat plenty of plants. Get outside while the leaves are changing. Take care of your gut.

And keep a cold Nectr waiting in the fridge.
